Alanis' "Humps"

Wow. In the history of Coverville, no cover had netted more emails than one that hit the "tubes" just a little while ago, and I have to admit, it's a doozy: Alanis Morissette covering the Black Eyed Peas' "My Humps", complete with a video.

Alanis, I am duly impressed. After this, any time you want to come on Coverville, you've got my complete admiration:

Thanks to: T/Lloyd, Dale, Ian, Aurakill, Allison, Klaus, and both Ian R.'s (yes, two "Ian R."s pointed this out to me) for the link!

I was in bed, but would have e-mailed too!

Yes, very good. Nice video too. Nice booty if I am allowed to say such things!

And I damn near emailed it too. Stupid time zones.

Also, the obvious joke:

Looks like she finally understands irony now.

Wow, I think I used Ian and not Ian R, that's really surprising though

The Mp3 is out there in the tubes if you look...

On the Irony thing, we had a show here the last 2 weeks "the top 100 pop sonmgs you love to hate" and "Ironic" was in the Top 10. They had this guy from the Oxford english History explaining the obvious, such as it raining on your wedding day is not ironic, it's just bad luck!

The funniest thing was they said it was reported that, like most Americans, she does not understand Irony, which of course is arguably the only ironic thing as she is Canadian!

My take is that her Jagged Little Pill album struck a chord and was absolutely superb, whatever the linguistic failings. Should have set her up for life which is great.

Alanis's cover of "king of pain" is also superb. Brian has played that.

Am I the only one who doesn't think that's her? It just doesn't look like her to me. I could easily be wrong, but I think it's a joke.

I think it's definitely her, SHelby, and it's great, great fun!

Awsome video. I was just going to point it out when I came here and noticed it was already posted. Great stuff!

surely alanis could do better than covering black eyes peas.. Is this what covers have become now, turning hip-hop into easy going? I think she ruined it.

that was equivalent to stretching the national anthem into a 30 minute ballad.

OK, so I've finally taken some valuable work time, searched the internet and now believe it's real. I just really didn't think that looked like her, but I guess it does. Quite an interesting cover. Anyone found a post about why she did it?

Posted by: Shelby at April 4, 2007 10:16 AM

Wow.

At first I thought "Has she sunk so low to covering shallow 15-minute pop artists to keep the spotlight?" Then I heard it and she really does--to use Brian's expression--"make it her own!" A lot more so than she did with Seal's "Crazy" a year or two ago anyway.

Never though this of all songs could be turned into a half-tragic piano ballad--and successfully at that! And is it just me or is the video shot entirely in slow-mo (just like her "Hand in My Pocket" was)?

Word fail me. (Great stuff.)

Posted by: Stephen at April 5, 2007 12:42 AM

Wow, I absolutely hated that song when done by the Black-Eyed Peas but it's something else entirely when Alanis does it! Lord have mercy!

There's a better quality (compared to YouTube) version of the song on iFilm, along with the crucial embed code.

She does look different in the video, but after seeing the original, I think it's because she's trying to mimic Fergie's looks.

To the 13 or so idiots above me, SHE WAS MAKING FUN OF THE RETARDED LYRICS AND STATE OF MUSIC IN GENERAL YOU BRAIN DEAD MONKEYS.

Posted by: Webmaster X at April 6, 2007 6:37 PM

"Webmaster X", I don't think anyone was disputing that. I didn't see anyone seriously believing that Alanis covered it for some genuine love for the song.

Posted by: Brian Ibbott at April 6, 2007 11:27 PM

She did it as an April Fool's joke

Interesting stuff, and pretty surreal, too. In addition to the obvious BEP put-on, I couldn't help but think in a purely musical sense of Tori Amos's sometime radical reinterpretations of other people's songs, too, spare and pianistic. Another level of piss-take, or too much of a reach, do you think?

Posted by: Marc at April 10, 2007 1:11 PM

Amazing. Thanks for posting this, Brian! It's her best work since "Dogma"!

Posted by: Doug Savage at April 11, 2007 12:55 AM

I think it is fabulous!! What a voice...I actually like it a ton better then the Black eyed peas version!

I would buy it as a single for my i-pod haha

The beautiful thing is when she hits the line about starting drama and the video switches from a parody of a hip hop video to a parody of an Alanis video. Just the extra layer it needed.
