You should be able to figure out tonight’s theme simply by looking at the titles of the included songs. (For those of you who like trivia – and this was completely unplanned – you’ll notice that the names range in descending order in numbers of letters, from seven down to three. Whoa.) Here’s on what’s on the show tonight:
Title (with link to iTunes, if available) | Artist (with link to the artists’ website, if available) | Album (with link to Amazon.com, if available) | Original Artist |
Charlie | Sophie Koh | She Will Have Her Way: The Songs of Tim & Neil Finn | Split Enz |
Jeremy | Off The Beat | Flail | Pearl Jam |
Daniel | The Asphalt | Submission | Elton John |

Thanks for playing Levon. Probably in my top 3 favourite songs ever and I actually like this version, but LOVE Elton’s version.
Re: Daniel, what was wrong with the lyrics that Bernie wrote? “Daniel is travelling tonight on a plane” is the opening line!
Is this referred to as “doing a Kevin Rowland” on the song? I honestly couldn’t concentrate on the track after that opening, but I’ll try again tomorrow!
Brian, it’s funny you should follow split enz with pearl jam, I’ve found youtube videos on youtube of eddie veder singing split enz tunes with the Finn brothers. I think somehow they know each other, I was thinking that their children have a band together or something.
BTW, if you like watching music videos, my website
http://www.chann3lz.com/ is a youtube mashup experiment that lets you add very easily from youtube. And trash them just as easily, though nothing really ever gets removed.. Everything is played in random order (no repeats for days, even weeks), potential to reference practically all of the content on youtube. I’m trying to see how well it scales, if you can throw some users at it, that would be appreciated, I’m more just interested to see new content.. I created it to see what people think is cool, and have videos playing forever in succession..

BTW, I thought you would enjoy this brian, I just found this at random on chann3lz.. Someone combined snowpatrol and police, calling it “every car you chase”. It works wel..
It might not be a common name in the US, but “Charlie” is short for Charlene or Charlotte (or even sometimes Caroline) in the antipodes. The conceit of the song is that the singer came home last night and doesn’t realise that he’s killed his lover in a drunken, jealous rage.
While I’d imagine it was originally aimed at a female “Charlie”, I think you’ve gender-bent it to get it into this show.
Thank you for pointing out that the Bon Jovi version of “Levon” is not one of your favorites, because I was cringing all the way through it. It combines all the worst aspects of Bon Jovi’s style – his awful high range, bombast for bombast’s sake, fake sincerity. Yecch.
Re: an above comment about Split Enz. I’ve heard Eddie Vedder and one of the Finns – Neil? – doing “History Never Repeats” and Pearl Jam themselves doing “I’ve Got You.” They’re both bootlegs, but if there’s a legal version out there, they’re worth hearing. Maybe PJ put the Split Enz song on one of their 70,000 concert CDs.
