in england, of course, walk away renee was (and still is) a four tops song
Yeah, as an Aussie I was a bit surprised that was a cover. Then again, there was an episode not that long ago when Brian expounded that “Cum on Feel the Noize” wasn’t originally by a group called Quiet Riot – which is a cover I’ve obviously never heard by a group I’ve never heard of.
It’s a little jarring when songs are matter-of-factly by one group to Americans, but the rest of the world don’t know that version from a bar of soap.
In my own little universe, Walk Away Renee is a Frankie Valli song. I just looked on Amazon and that song has really been covered a lot.
There were two Weird Al style parodies that I was sure would have been in that Musically Challenged, especially with seven songs in the list. I was shocked — SHOCKED, I say! — that neither his ode to the pancreas nor his good-humored attack on Jerry Lewis were included.
That Vampire Weekend cover is fantastic! Thanks for turning me onto it. The Honeycombs video is pretty entertaining, but I prefer the Vampire Weekend version.

Re: Jim’s call, there were black artists (notably the Supremes’ 1964 A Bit of Liverpool) who covered white artists, and the Beatles generally got covered a lot. But, IMO, I think the first SIGNIFICANT covers were Satisfaction by Otis Redding (#31 in 1966) and Stevie Wonder (#9 in 1966).
