Just wanted to point out that Utada Hikara is the second vocalist on the “I Wont Last a Day Without You” cover. Pleasantly surprised to hear her voice on that track.
I was watching CBS Sunday Morning a few weeks ago, and Herb Alpert, the A in A&M Records who signed the duo, still gets weepy-eyed about the loss of Karen Carpenter.
Guilty pleasure time. Fantastic Brian.
They wrote some awesome songs didn’t they?
Great show! It got me to do a little googling and I found a great cover of “Superstar” by Sonic Youth. Maybe you can include it on a future episode.
Hi Rick
It’s track 3 on that “If I were a Carpenter” CD Brian mentioned.
Just get thge whole album – it’s great!

The main reason I listen to Coverville is to catch that rare cover that is so unique and innovative that it rivals, and sometimes surpasses, the original. The Shock of Pleasure cover of Superstar is one of those rare gems. Thanks, Brian! That was freaking gorgeous! Yes, the Carpenters almost always did really good songs. Say what you want about their squeaky clean production and frequently schmaltzy lyrics, the compositions and arrangements were superb!
Exactly what I came here to say! That was a real gem.
