Brian said, Over 200 episodes and I still haven't played all the Hallelujah covers out there.
Let's start a list of good Hallelujah covers and not-so-good ones. List the artist and album, and any comments you might have. Obviously, what is good to one person might not be to another.
Here are a few that I know of.
Good:
Popa Chubby, from Big Man Big Guitar Popa Chubby Live
- an excellent blues-like version; my current favorite
Blue Juipiter, from Ear Candy
- an a capella version; very well done
Not-so-good
Kathryn Williams, from Relations
- too slow for me, but peaceful nonetheless _________________ Jerad from Indiana |

I was going to add that one, but I thought it was done by John Cale. |

Brandi Carlile does an excellent acoustic version that I think is only available on ITunes.
I'd provide a link but I'm here at work. It's listed as "KCRW.com Presents" under the album.
It was a live thing she did at a radio station, I believe, just her and a guitar, and her voice is just wonderful, raw and gorgeous. |

|

http://www.allisoncrowe.com/music/hallelujah.mp3 - audio (as heard on Brian's podcast; though, I'm guessing this version is slightly hi-er fi; someday, I'll post a 256 or so version - as some audio breaks up on the web)
http://www.allisoncrowe.com/Hallelujahvideos.html - video - yes, indeed video versions
all of these are captured live, in a single, first, take (as is pretty much everything Allison records)
just a brilliant song - a real work of Leonard Cohen's genius, and, understandably, one which millions of people love as expressed by many different artists _________________ "Why music?" "Why breathing?" |

Elisa does a version on her Lotus album, I dunno, there's nothing glaringly bad about it, but somehow falls flat and doesn't really do anything for me, especially compared to her original work..
Elisa - Lotus
Damien Rice will quite often segue into Hallelujah, I think usually from Cold Water, during his live sets |

It was John Cale in the movie and Rufus Wainwright on the soundtrack album - not sure why.
I love them both but I think the Cale version is my all-time favorite. |

Ok, I remember that now... I knew there was something odd about it because Rufus Wainwright sounded familiar too...
I'd like to point you towards songfacts.com, which has some interesting information about this song at http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=2504 |

The Brown Derbies (a cappella) have a beautiful quartet cover of Hallelujah. It'll be out on their next album, due out in December. Check 'em out at www.myspace.com/thebrownderbies or www.brownderbies.com
... okay, I may be just a little bit bias because I'm the bass in the recording . But it really is great. We were featured way back on Coverville 53.

Worst cover might be Bono's on the Tower of Song tribute album.
My favourite cover is Jeff Buckley's live version. Not the studio version on Grace, but the one from Complete Live at Sin-E.
Sometimes I think of this cut as "Hallelujah (This gig is over)".
