Please don’t ever attempt “Kamakawiwoole” again. Ever.
Just use “Iz” in the future for the love of Peet! I used to work at a Borders in the international music section and I don’t think one person ever came in asking for the full name. Why Hawaiian is stocked in the international section at Borders don’t even ask. 🙂
Exactly what is it that’s so “heartwarming” about that version of “Over The Rainbow?” The singer’s merely casual acquaintance with the actual lyrics of the song? His dogged commitment to playing the same chord progression in an endless loop, despite the fact that the song includes a bridge? Or maybe it’s just the ukulele… Sorry, I just don’t get it.
Now, see what you did, Pat? You made me think about it! Here’s what I came up with: It’s the simplicity of this version – much like Judy Garland’s original – that gives it the air of solitude and longing. But I think, of all the versions though, I like Eva Cassidy’s best. There’s an echo in her voice that sounds so angelic and other-worldy.
And I promise never to try and pronounce IZ’s name again.
Thanks for the Iz song. That’s one of my favorite songs, cover or not.
If you play it again, I’d suggest the version from his Facing Future album. It’s a blend of ‘Over the Rainbow’ and What a Wonderful World. A really beautiful mix. I think it might be the one that most of the soundtracks sample from.
There’s a haunting tone to his voice that really fits the song.
