Hey have I said this before? 😉
I got an email from a listener in Australia this morning, asking “What’s Groundhog Day?”. Good question!
You know, when I was putting this show together, I never even thought about it being a North American holiday.
Groundhog Day is an annual holiday that goes back to the mid-1800s. It’s said that if a groundhog emerges from its burrow on the morning of February 2, and sees its shadow (meaning the sky is not overcast), then there will be six more weeks of Winter. If the groundhog doesn’t see its shadow, there will be an early Spring.
But the inspiration for Episode 175 of Coverville was actually a Bill Murray movie from 1993. Bill plays a weatherman, who is ‘trapped’ on February 2, and must repeat the day over and over until he learns to be less selfish, and fall in love. Hence, the repeating beginning of Coverville.
If you haven’t seen the movie, I totally recommend it. I think it’s one of Bill Murray’s funniest.

Thank you! This has to be my favorite episode of late. The cover of “Oops!…” is probably the best cover I’ve ever heard. I almost may have to spring for the cost of having Max Raabe’s album shipped over from Europe.
Hey Brian,
you made my Day 🙂 first I didn’t realise why the beginning of the Show was repeating because the Movie was called “Und Täglich grüßt das Murmeltier” in germany. But then I figured it out 🙂 One of your best shows ever. Congratulations.
Coverville ist really rockin’
Andreas (Germany)
Ahhh…oookay! Now I understand what is happening in this episode. I thought Winamp was broken and playing the beginning of the track. I’m slow. Thanks for the explanation — and the cover songs! I love the Britney covers. My favorite is still Fountains of Wayne’s version of ‘One More Time.
You missed Richard Thompson’s cover of Oops! It’s off of the “1000 years of popular music LIVE” album. The cover of Prince’s “Kiss” is alsogreat.
Missed it? I just didn’t include it, since I played it here.
Hey, Brian! I just went through your archives to see what you did for the show last year at this time, and I saw that we’re near your son Tristan’s birthday. So, Happy Birthday, Tristan!
!!!!!!! I am laughing so hard at the moment!!!!
It took me until 18 minutes in to get the joke!!!!!!!!!!!!
I thought my download must have been faulty – I was so slow!
Absolutely brilliant show – thank you so so much!!!
lol lol lol lol
Brian – You are so CLEVER! Way to go! How are you doing this with a straight face and not laughing, that’s what I want to know! Keep up the good work!
Joe
Brilliant! And the “I Got You Babe” at the end was a great touch!

One of the best shows ever!
Drat! Just when I thought “oh, an experienced podcaster with tons of experience has made a mistake and so I shouldn’t feel bad that I didn’t edit out a repeat in my last episode”, I realized you did it on purpose!
After telling my partner about the episode, she wanted to hear it. So I listened to it again on a car ride yesterday with her. She just laughed and laughed at the B. Spears songs. And she explained the whole “raise and shine” thing. I had forgotten about that from the movie. Anyway, you now have another convert to the show!
Awesome show. I didn’t get it until about halfway through. Thanks for helping to make my birthday (2/6) just a little bit better.
James
Totally hysterical. I loved it!
I about pee’d my pants laughing when I FINALLY twigged that you kept introducing GROUNDHOG DAY at the beginning .. first repeat I actually checked my iRiver to see if it had been inadvertantly set on “loop” … Brilliant stuff, Brian!
Thanks from over here in Greeley!
Nice gag. 🙂
Another Spears cover from San Diego (nice Nickel Creek inclusion, by the way) is former San Diego Padre Tim Flannery’s cover of “Oops…I Did It Again”. I’m sure there are many others.
OK you got me. I had a moment of “on no something is wrong with the show, he already did that part” before I got it and laughed out loud.
Nice theme, though I should point out that “Oops I did it again” was originally done by Louis Armstrong. http://www.supermasterpiece.com/music/oops.html
I started listening to the show as I was going to sleep for the night… Kept waking up to the start of the show… but the music kept changing… I was truly confused in my sleepy state. Everything was clear by morning though… heh!
Brilliant!!
I loved the show opener, with the “dont forget your booties cuz it’s cooooold out there today!” I loved that movie so I dug it…
then the opener replayed, and i have to admit, i was one of the “WTF” crowd. Thought you messed up.
But then when I GOT IT, and that you played the same 2 songs each time… I laughed out loud at your brilliance.
PRetty Darn Clever if you ask me. Way to go. Nice work.
PS> I love Britney covers, so bonus for me!
This weeks show brought to you by Xerox :^)
