One of the founders of pub-rock, a frequent collaborator with Elvis Costello, and the stepson-in-law to the late Johnny Cash. Tonight I honor one of my favorite songwriters, Nick Lowe. I’m joined by Chris Browne, who knows almost as much about Nick as he does Mr. Costello. Here’s what’s on the super-sized show tonight:

(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace Love and Understanding | Trip Shakespeare | Volt | Brinsley Schwarz |
Cruel To Be Kind | Ian Gomm | Stretch | Brinsley Schwarz |
Heart | Tiffany Anastasia Lowe | Lowe Profile: A Tribute to Nick Lowe | Rockpile/Nick Lowe |
Without Love | Johnny Cash | Covered By Cash | Nick Lowe |
I Knew The Bride (When She Used To Rock and Roll) | The Knack | Get the Knack (re-release) | Dave Edmunds |

Catch Chris Browne and I yakkin’ it up on our other podcast, The Not Lame Podcast!
Great show! I was hoping you would play “Switch Board Susan” by the Searchers from their first Sire album in 1979.

Hey Brian, great show – you’ve been on a roll since Groundhog Day! Your Nick cover story reminded me that an Austin singer named Elizabeth McQueen released a fun pub-rock tribute album last year called “Happy Doing What We’re Doing.” If you can get your hands on it, you might enjoy playing her versions of Graham Parker’s “Local Girls” and Squeeze’s “Annie Get Your Gun” sometime. thanks again for the great music!
This was one of my favorite shows. I can’t believe that the Chris Daughtry post currently has more comments than Nick Lowe podcast.
But then, I guess that American Idol is Coverville’s evil twin, or embarrassing brother Billy, or something like that…
Great show! I just love Trip Shakespeare!
Man, I was thinking back and I can’t believe it’s been THIRTEEN years since I saw them live. That makes me feel old. 🙂
I’m just thrilled that “Are You Shakespearienced?” is finally available again since my cassette copy was long dead.

Brian —
I was so inspired by this show that I went to the local music broker and bought a Nick Lowe album. Granted, it’s only a greatest hits CD, but I think it’ll sustain me until can afford to buy all the classic albums I’m supposed to have.
Keep up the good work!

Tom Petty covers “Crackin’ Up” on disc number four of his Playback Box Set.
I also wanted to mention on your last podcast, you miss-identified Ian McCulloch as “Echo” from Echo and the Bunnymen. Fact is, Ian was just one of the bunnymen. “Echo” was the name of the drum machine they used at the beginning of the band’s career.
Brian,
Great show! I’m a big Nick Lowe fan. I’ve seen him live with Rockpile, the Cowboy Outfit and with Paul Carrack.
Anyway, it was Nick, not Dave, that wrote I Knew The Bride. Double check your sources…it wasn’t that co-host was it?
Keep up the good work.
