Paul Young also does a superb cover of Soldiers Things on his 1985 “Secret of association” album.
One of my favourite albums of all time and probably my favourite year music-wise. Left school that summer and there were so many great songs it is untrue.
I’d recommend obtaining a copy. Has “Everytime you go away” on it too plus Billy Bragg’s “Man in the iron mask”. I was lucky enough to pick up a signed vinyl copy last year for a whole 50 pence!!
Thanks for getting the Loud Family track online! And the Self-styled cover of “Ana Ng” is great.
Th CaT Stevens song was in The Harold and Maude. It’s play when he blowing bubble in bed with ruth gordon.
wow
Hi Brian. You asked for feedback on the frequency of the show. I think maybe twice a week is good enough for me.
Covering Tom Waits: With respect to Wayne and Brian and covering Tom Waits, the covers are always far worse than the original. Of course, with music, everything is subjective – but – I find that Paul Young cover hideously trite treacle. “Hey! That jack knife is RUSTED!” Paul misses the point of the song – entirely. One should not conflate the existence of a Tom Waits cover with it being well done – I’m hard pressed to think of where someone took a TW song made it better – I don’t think you can do it. I’m sure if one exists, Brian will find and play it.
The version on Coverville is beautifully sung, but what is up with that horn? It’s like a type-A driver behind you in traffic, and it just won’t stop blaring. Sorry – well performed, beautifully song – it pales to the original.
I guess the Tom Waits Police have arrived!
Seriously, Kyle, I respect your view and it is not unreasonable when you love an artist so much. Show 154 was a Tom Waits cover story and had a couple of good songs, particularly Pedra Haden and Bill Frisell covering “I don’t wanna grow up”. IMO of course.
Can I offer up “lookin’ for the heart of Saturday night”, not by Shawn Colvin but by Mr Dion Dimucci. I think it is superb. Have you heard this?
I just wanted to say, Brian, that I voted for you in the MATURE category A) because I think you deserve it and B) because I want to see you crush Soccergirl, Keith + Girl, D&D, et al. Best of luck.
The cover of “Hold Me Now” is absolutely one of my favorite songs I’ve heard on the show for a while. T
She strips away the 80’s affectations, the “chilly” synths and exposes a suprisngly tender song inside that I’d never really heard before, or at least couldn’t remember after 20 years of repetition.
