Yay! Throwing Muses is such an amazing band that doesn’t get nearly enough play. I am a huge fan of the entire TM family tree and so was great to hear some songs that I hadn’t heard before on the show. Thanks and keep up the great work!
Hi Brian…
Love the show and your exquisite taste in music. Just wanted to call to your attention that “Drivin’ on 9” by the Breeders is actually not the original but a cover itself. The song was written by Ed’s Redeeming Qualities, another band from Ohio that the Deal sisters were friends with. A live version of the song appeared on their 1995 album Big Grapefruit Cleanup Job.
Interesting though, the cover you played here is closer to the original in feel, as ERQ were an acoustic folk trio.
And thanks so much for being my favorite podcast.

Can the Circle be Unbroken (bye and bye) was adapted from a hymn by Ada R. Habershon and Charles Gabriel.
I guess this would drag it into the “Is it a cover?” camp!
Most times it is performed as “Will the circle be unbroken”, most famously by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, on both volumes of their albums of the same name from the 70’s and 90’s, featuring the Cash family on both I believe.
I think you missed out by not using the Kristin Hersh cover of Big Star’s “Jesus Christ” from the Holy Single – much as I like the “Circle” version, covering the Big Star was much more impressive.
Unless you’re saving it for the long-awaited Big Star cover story. In which case, consider this a nomination!
