“His voice just gets better with age,” you said about Leonard Cohen’s vocals on Jennifer Warnes’ version of “Joan of Arc.”
Um … you realize that this song, and the album “Famous Blue Raincoat,” came out in 1987, right?
I don’t disagree with the point. He’s released an album recently and he has really grown into his voice. But it sounded like an odd comment.
Oh, and I must praise you for playing Johnny Cash’s full-orchestra version of “Bird on a Wire.” I hadn’t heard that beautiful version.
I used to have a copy of the “I’m Your Fan” compliation that came out in the 1980s. Two songs in particular stuck out as excellent covers. Nick Cave does a wild romp through “Tower of Song,” and R.E.M. turns “First We Take Manhattan” into a foreboding and mesmerizing song. Both would be perfect for the Leonard Cohen Cover Story III.
Sorry, I should have been clearer. I’m definitely aware “FBR” came out 20 years ago (thanks to the excellent 20th Anniversary CD), I was really comparing the Leonard Cohen of “Bird On A Wire” to the Leonard Cohen of the last 20 or so years; starting with “Various Positions” and “I’m Your Man”. His voice has gotten richer, and deeper, and fuller.
Brian –
Great show, but, good grief that Stephanie Rearick cover of Democracy was just awful. I thought it would never end….. One of the first times I was actually glad to hear the closing theme.
I’ve heard other of her stuff and she’s quite a talented artist.
You’d never guess from that cover.
Oh well, one man’s opinion, as they say, YMMV.

Listening to this one a little late, but I thought I’d recommend the Ramones for max WoW carnage. 😀
