One of the most charismatic performers of all time is celebrated on tonight’s show. As a fan of Bobby Darin’s music and style, putting together a show featuring Bobby Darin-related covers was a treat! Here’s what you’ll hear:
“La Bamba” – Bobby Darin (originally Richie Valens)
“Queen of the Hop” – Dave Edmunds (originally Bobby Darin)
“Dream Lover” – Kevin Spacey (originally Bobby Darin)
“Mack the Knife” – The Psychedelic Furs (originally Bobby Darin)
“Artificial Flowers” – The Beautiful South (originally Bobby Darin)
“Up a Lazy River”- Rickie Lee Jones (originally Bobby Darin)
“On Broadway” – Bobby Darin (originally The Drifters)
“Beyond the Sea” – Royal Crown Revue (originally Bobby Darin)
This is great.
I’ve syndicated it to Live Journal under:

Just wanted you to know that the mark up language for this entry is not parsing correctly.
Keep up the good work!
“Mack the Knife” was written by Kurt Weill and Bertold Brecht(NOT Bobby Darin!) and appeared in the Threepenny Opera, originally written and sung in German.
Actually, while “Beyond the Sea” is considered a Bobby Darin classic, it was originally a French hit a number of years before Bobby made his own English version. I think the original words and music were composed by Charles Trenet.
Just wanted to put in a request for next time you do a request show. My favorite cover is Johnny Cash covering Hurt from NIN.
Fantastic! Thanks so much, Brian. Justice was more than served.
I’ll have to listen to the Kevin Spacey interview with Terry Gross now; I’ve been procastinating.
VERY cool show! Thanks for covering the Bobby Darin covers, amazing.
You have a link for Mack the Knife to the iTunes store for the Psyc. Furs cover. But iTunes Store only has a partial album, which does not include that song. I found the CD at http://www.sonymusicstore.com/store/catalog/MerchandiseDetails.jsp?selectionId=057889
If the link doesn’t work, just do a search on B-sides and Lost Groves.
Anyway, I thought that cover was terrific – I’m probably one of your older listeners & I find that your show is connecting me to contemporary music I might not otherwise pay much attention to. Very enjoyable.
Hi, Brian –
First, thanks for a GREAT podcast. My only complaint is that it’s hard to keep up. One thing I really like is your “reverse covers”, where the original may not have had much play, but the cover is more famous.
Next, I’ve tried to buy iPodderX using the “coverville” coupon code, and every time I get a message telling me the coupon’s invalid. I’ve tried “Coverville”, “coverville” and “COVERVILLE”, all with no luck. Is that deal still running? I’ll buy it either way, but saving $5 would be good.
Last, my sympathies on your hard drive troubles. I consider myself bisystemic, too, and dream of the day when I don’t have to deal with the Redmond evil empire. Maybe the MiniMac will help with that?
Best regards
Ken
