It’s the anniversary of February 3, 1959; The Day The Music Died – Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and J.P. Richardson (a.k.a. The Big Bopper) were killed in a plane crash on their way from Iowa to Minnesota. We’ll honor their memory with some covers of their work:
“Chantilly Lace” – Jerry Lee Lewis (originally The Big Bopper)
“Donna” – The Misfits (originally Richie Valens)
“La Bamba” – Harry Belafonte (originally Richie Valens)
“True Love Ways” – Erasure (originally Buddy Holly)
“Oh Boy” – Joe Ely and Todd Snider (originally Buddy Holly)
“It Doesn’t Matter Anymore” – Dave Edmunds and Suzy Bogguss (originally Buddy Holly)
“American Pie” – The Brady Kids (originally Don McLean)
“Buddy Holly” – Richard Cheese (originally Weezer)

I have a Lou Reed cover. Are you interested?
Thanks for the Buddy Holly Tribute. We incorporated his recording innovations on the recent album.
Hi Brian-
Love your podcast; been listening for about 2 months now; but this show with the Brady Kids doing “American Pie”….thought I had accidentally tuned into “The Annoying Music Show” on Chicago public radio.
On your previous show, you indicated that the Muppets were the first to perform, “Mahna, Mahna” I know this song was around before Sesame Street existed. I remember hearing it on my transister radio while detasselling corn when I was in junior high (circa 1965). Don’t know the name of the group that did it first, though.
I have a request for Sunday’s show. Since this is Super Bowl Sunday and there will be lots of wagers taking place and since this is the 70th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s birth, why not a cover of “Viva Las Vegas?” I know of two — ZZ Topp and Shawn Colvin have both done great covers.
Take care, Brian
Jim
Another excellent show. Like you, I too would rather listen to the Brady Bunch’s version of American Pie over Madonna’s stinky version any day of the week. If you decide to play a cover of Viva Las Vegas, consider Springsteen’s from his Essentials collection.
Keep up the great work and thanks for the link!

Brian:
So I’m listening to your show as usual and almost had a heartattack. I almost thought you were going to play Madonna’s version of American Pie but your horrible tease/scare was punctuated by a close second in the “What the …????” category with the Brady Kids doing American Pie. While Madonna’s version is pure crap and she should be shot for considering it, the Brady’s version is like when a puppy chews up your new Air Jordans. While the puppy may be cute, you still want to kick it across the room. Just my two cents. Regardless, your show is great, keep it up.
Dear Brian: Please play something, anything, by Wing.

I’m especially eager to hear anything off her Beatles cover album. I own her Carpenters cover album, and … well, words can’t describe the horrifyingly beautiful musical oddity that is Wing. Listen to her version of “Yesterday Once More” and you’ll hear, instantly, what I mean. Notes heretofore unheard by humanity, phrasings as yet unattempted in song or rhyme.
By the way, great great great podcast. It’s you and OTM and that’s it.
All the best,
Michael
Brian, great podcast! And cool tribute, I particularly liked the Belafonte, I’ve never heard that version.
To answer Jim’s Mahna Mahna question, it comes from a 1968 song by Piero Umiliani from a Swedish documentary…so technically the Muppets version IS a cover! There’s a lot more info on it here:

I could not find a contact email link on the site so I am gonna post my thought here. I jsut stumbled onto this podcast and I love it. I have an idea that maybe you have already thought of. I am always listening for new versions of “My Funny Valentine” covers after hearing Elvis Costellos version may moons ago. I think that would make a great Valentines Day podcast. There are a lotta different versions out there. Just a thought. Keep up the good work.
forgive me if this is not the correct venue to submit music. i couldn’t find an email link on the site.
we have a kickin’ cover of “(don’t fear the) reaper”, real moody, downtempo, killer female vocals.
it is licensed and on itunes. the band is called “seks”.
please podcast it!
thanks!

Brian:
My compliments for avoiding all of the obvious Holly/Valens covers.
I really like the “My Funny Valentine” idea mentioned by one of your listeners. I thought of making a CD of “Funny Valentine” covers because there are so many good ones. I actually did put together an “April in Paris” CD for my Francophile daughter that included about a dozen versions, ending with the spectacular Duke Ellington version. Perhaps an idea for an April show.
