Nice interview, Brian. FWIW, I love the rough sound of Coverville. I think commercial radio has become so polished, it's boring.
In Atlanta, we used to have a great alternative station, 99X. At it's height, you could turn on 99X, and know what DJ was on the air by the music you heard. Elvis Costello and The Cult? Steve. Metallica and NIN? Axel. Space Ghost? Sean. The Outfield? Barnes. The same Nirvana song three times in a row, followed by Tony Bennett? Will.
99X started to fall apart when station management started squashing their individuality. By the time the plug was pulled last year, I couldn't tell you anything about the DJ's (except Steve and Axel, who lasted all the way, but lost their individual voices). There's something special about listening to someone else talk about the music they love. If I just want to hear the music I already love, I've got an iPod.
Keep up the good work! Good luck on switching to full-time. Don't be afraid, go for it! The time you spend on the proposed hour show will probably be less than what you spend consulting…
Great interview! I knew you usually listened to the songs that you're playing but I didn't know that you did the whole thing live. (I remember early on you used to post mistakes during the closing credits) I think your subscription service is interesting.
I have 12 episodes that I haven't listened to but I have to admit that it's partly because I'm a completist. I want to hear every one and, with podcasts, that's possible. I also want to hear every "Morning Edition" on NPR but if I miss one, it's gone. Podcasts are great because they let you listen to everyone even if your schedule is crazy.
Loved the interview. There are LOTS of us who haven't gone back to the beginning yet (but will eventually- really!) I think I started in the 410s, then worked backwards to 406 (which is as far back as iTunes went).
