Thanks foor playing the Bonnie Raitt version from Boys on the Side, rather than the Whoopi Goldberg version.
Thanks for fulfilling this request Brian. A fantastic tribute to a great singer, sadly missed.
One of the best shows of the year IMO
Wayne
One correction: Roy died after the first album, not the second. They did Vol. 3 (the second album) without him and, from accounts I remember reading then, ran into bad luck trying to fill his seat. Contender Del Shannon killed himself, though eventually his final album was released posthumously featuring production by Jeff Lynne and a guest appearance by at least Tom Petty. Another contender, Carl Perkins, had to bow out due to a cancer diagnosis. So about the only personnel change between one and two was Roy's death and a guest guitar bit by English bluesman Gary Moore on "She's My Baby."
And their attempt to recruit someone from beyond the grave — Elvis Presley, using an unfinished demo's vocal — didn't pan out, either, but George Harrison put the idea to use later, resulting in the "new" Beatles singles "Real Love" and "Free As a Bird" on the BEATLES ANTHOLOGY albums, which featured John Lennon vocals taken from demos and mixed with new material by the surviving Beatles. (Yeah, I'm a little obsessed with Wilbury trivia.)
Still … a great show, much appreciated. One of the best of the year, and I'm so glad to see that Nick Cave cover included in the mix. And, for those who don't know, "She's a Mystery to Me" was written for Orbison by Bono and The Edge from U2.
Thanks for playing the Flying Pickets cover of Only The Lonely, Brian. It's honestly the first time I've heard it since it was first released back in the mid-80s in the UK.
Even though they were seen as a bit of a novelty act, it's a really fantastic cover (and just as good as their version of Yaz(oo)'s Only You)
Great show and I learned a lot about this great artist. In fact, I've known of a version of Dolphins for years, never knew it was written by Fred Neil. IMO, it's a much more beautiful version than the Pogues take: Dave Graney and the White Buffaloes covered Dolphins on their hard to find "My Life On The Plains" album, from 1989. Worth seeking out. If you're interested, and can't turn up your own copy, I'll happily provide an MP3.
