At the best of times I have the last song I hear before going into work in my head all day, but this is crazy – this might be there all week!!
I don't think I knew the Terry Jacks version was a cover, and it is interesting that it had been recorded with similar lyrics and rythym by the Kingston Trio and the Beach Boys before Terry recorded it. With the different lyrics, working out the royalties must be a nightmare!
Brian – You're killing me! An unavailable Beach Boys song! Well, I guess I'll just have to save the episode…
I think that black box recorder is still my favorite cover of the song- love her vocals
Liked the show and the general concept of doing an entire show around one song. I'm thinking Terry cut the verse about the wife because he had just separated from his wife Susan at the time of this song and it was probably too painful for him. Speaking of Susan, the Poppy Family had a string of hits prior to "Seasons" and there's probably some good cover versions of those songs out there waiting to be mined for Coverville. Such as "That's Where I Went Wrong" and "Which Way You Goin' Billy".
Wow, the english version is so different from the french one! Not the same feeling at all. The french version is way more tongue-in-cheek, even though it's about death. He talks about his cheating wife, it's actually a way more present theme in the french version. Personally I like the original lyrics better, less depressing.
The english version is interpreted by Rod McKuen, and I guess he took some liberties with it.
Wow, that Nirvana version was BAD. The intentionally bad version of ‘Blowing in the Wind’ from Me First & The Gimme Gimme’s ‘Ruin Jonny’s Bar Mitzvah’ was better. It also had the original french lyrics. (it’s a bonus track hidden behind the final track)
