Great show, Brian & Oliver!
3. Yes, the Purifys went to #6 in 1966
4. Official title apparently starts w It's; I mention only in case someone's looking up in a book, as I did. Big hit for Deniece Williams in 1982. But it has me coveting the Laura Nyro album Gonna Take A Miracle – http://tinyurl.com/3yovarz with Labelle on it. Feel free to play any song from that album, any time.
5. Who are the Marvels? They're not the mid-1950s group that became The Dubs. But it is the Marvelettes, who were originally the Marvels? Or is it some other group?
7. Baby It's You was a big hit in my youth (#5 in 1969), but Smith was probably as well known for the fact that it's their version of The Weight that shows up on the Easy Rider soundtrack, even though The Band's version was in the movie. http://theband.hiof.no/albums/a_group_called_smit…
8. My sister owned the My Cherie Amour album, yet I don't remember that song!
9. The studio version of this song shows up on one of those Red, Hot & Blue collections. I love that song, but one of my office mates considered it sacrilege.
10. Sam Cooke would have been 80 on January 22, 2011. HINT, HINT. —
Roger's covered just about everything I might have wanted to mention, but I will put in a plug for Gayle McCormick, lead vocalist of Smith, who did some excellent solo work after the band split. (Her 1971 single "It's a Crying Shame" halted just short of the Top 40; it was included on the mid-90s CD reissue of A Group Called Smith.)
Roger: The Marvels are a group out of Jamaica, wholly unrelated to the Marvelettes. Marvels recorded for Pama; not sure if they put anything else besides one single for them though.
Just got to this show… man oh man, the Billy Stewart cover had me jumping. So good. Thank you for the introduction to a fabulous artist.
Billy Stewart's awesome… very distinctive, no one else sounds like that!!
I finally listened to this show today, and third the sentiment that the Billy Stewart track is crazy awesome.
Today I also heard a live cover of "Bang Bang" by the Jack White side project The Raconteurs, which is as epic as you might expect.
