This poor episode suffers from a lack of self identity. Sad, but true. Is it an all-request show? Is it an indie hodgepodge? Or is it a Lost In Translation episode? And how can you win a signed Erin McCarley tote bag, courtesy of Stetson? All will be revealed in this episode.

This was a pretty cool cover of “I Saw The Light”, but for me, the The The version always wins. (wow, that’s three “the”s in a row!)
I suppose Cracker’s “I See the Light” doesn’t count either… In that case, I guess I’ll go with the only cover of it I know, although I haven’t heard it for about 25 years: The Pilgrim Friars, a band made up of Dominican Brothers (Dominican as in the Catholic order, not the Dominican Republic).
I actually really liked that Erin McCarley version. Something about her voice.
I’m so embarrassed. I’ve known this song from church singalongs for decades, and I assumed it was a much older song, maybe even public domain.
Anyway, I’ll go with Johnny Cash: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vouJBurjOM
Now that I think of it, the last time I was in Istanbul, the signs at the airport were translated into both English and French, so a French-language version of “Istanbul (Not Constantinople)” makes perfect sense to me.
Love Victoria. More Uke!
I can’t say I was familiar with “I Saw The Light” before now. After checking a few version on Youtube, I have to say I enjoy the Erin McCarley version the best. Although the David Crowder Band version appeals to my love of really good banjo picking.
Like Roger, I grew up with “I Saw The Light”, singing it in church. My favorite recorded version is by Etta James.
Although, I would rather hear it in the Liberty Baptist Church, sitting next to Grandpa and Grandma.
Best cover of “I saw the light” for me is David Crowder*Band on their album B Collision (The Eschatology of Bluegrass) which is a live version, the studio version is also a great pick on their album A Collision or (3 + 4 = 7). The live version gives the song great energy and a fun bluegrass flavor.
Erin McCarley sounds good to me!! 🙂
-D!
I never realized that this was a Hank Williams song. Anyway, I’ve got to vote for the Todd Rundgren “cover”. I feel like I’m cheating since that is the original version in my head.
I was ready to vote the Erin McCarley as the best “I Saw the Light” cover, then I read Aaron’s comment about The The’s cover. I have always loved The The. So I went and listened to it.
I before I could finish writing the above, I read Mike H’s comment. I also feel like I’m cheating…Todd Rundgren’s version is the “original” in my brain.
So Todd Rundgren gets my vote.
Cheers from Moscow,
Mike
“And before…” Not: “I before…” What a dork!
Actually, the Todd Rundgren song have the same title, but it’s a completely different song. Not a cover, I’m afraid.
I may be in the Johnny Cash camp here.
Brian, you should feel bad for not getting the Buffy song during the musically challenged. If there hadn’t been a song from Buffy during that challenge I would have been disappointed. Overall a really good quiz put by that listener. Hopefully he does it again.
Haven’t you played that version of All Along the Watchtower on the show? It is hauntingly beautiful.
