I love Coverville.
I love Jim Croce.
I love the Jim Croce Cover Story.
Thanks Brian, great stuff.
I admit I was a big Croce fan; have 3 LPs on vinyl. He had 2 #1s (Leroy; Time in a Bottle, which 1st charted 11/17/73); #8 You Don’t Mess; #9 I Have To Say I Love You in a Song (1st charted 3/2/74); #10 I Got A Name (1st charted 10/6/73); and #17 Operator. But though I Got a Name charted before Time in a Bottle, I can’t find anything, pro OR con, to clarify your premise that Bottle came out before Name; frustrating for a librarian.
Hey, Brian, did I mention that I like it when you do these shows around the artist’s birthday? Well played.
Interesting site and nice collection of covers.
Time In A Bottle was on Jim’s first ABC Records LP – You Don’t Mess Around With Jim – released in 1972. I Got A Name, the single and the LP, came out after Jim and Maury died in 1973. Time In A Bottle received recognition because it was the theme song for a made-for-TV movie that was broadcast only one week before their deaths. The timing of the movie and the plane crash created renewed interest in this song from the earlier album.
Hey, Mary. Should I assume you’re related to Maury? I know he had a sister named Mary, who was featured in this article – http://sections.nj.com/SS/Page.aspx?secid=87110&pagenum=90&sstarg=&facing=false – are you she?
Breaking the trend, I had never heard of the guy. But I loved this podcast! That’s what Coverville is all about.
Yep! That’s me! Nice to meet you and the other posters.
Happened upon Coverville the other day and thought I’d help with the timing of the songs.
Brian – I just was listening to this episode. The movie scene at the end of Bad Bad Leroy Brown from Furillo is from Detroit Rock City.
I grew up listening to Jim Croce – one of my mom’s favorites. Thanks so much for those memories!
Who is Brad Simmons? When was that cut “time in a bottle” out? Love the way he breaks through and releases himself, then brings it down again, then breaks out and releases all again. Does anyone in america own “know bs” other than you?
