You know the first song ever played on MTV just about 30 years ago, right? Well, do you know the first cover played on MTV? You’ll find out when you listen to this special tribute to 13 of the first videos shown on the network once known as Music Television.

Awesome show. Of course, I liked the trivia about the Who being the first band’s video to be played twice.
Is it just me or did that clumsy Blur edit end up saying “one more widow, one less white Asian”?
Yeah, that was my clumsy edit, I’m afraid. Gotta keep the show out of the explicit tags.
Was that why Nina Gordon got inducted into the hall of fame rather than being played in the countdown each year?
No – that song actually made it over the threshold that I use for the Hall of Fame. You’ll notice Ben Folds’ “Bitches Ain’t Sh*t” is still in the running for the Countdowns!
To be honest, the S bomb doesn’t bother me. I might let an F bomb slide in a song, but if I catch it, I’ll probably try to edit it. But I have a real problem with the N word. There’s so much hate and intolerance associated with that word. I love Elvis Costello, so it’s a massively tough thing for me to censor his words.
The amusing thing is that these days the edit might be construed as more offensive in the UK than the original (and yes, I know that you were just dropping the previous verse in, but it sounded like that).
Of course, what offends me is that the line doesn’t say “one fewer…”.
Oh MTV how cool you used to be.
Thanks for another great episode Brian. Do we need to kick up the Citizen membership in order to get Coverville Studios a UPS which’ll make sure the recording doesn’t stop when the lights blink? 🙂
Did the recording stop? I’m on a laptop, so it should have just killed the feed. Everything seemed to continue just fine here.
No, all was well. I was being a smart*ss.
Brian, I’m a near-thiry-year listener of Hüsker Dü and after reading Bob Mould’s autobiography may I suggest a Hüsker Dü / Sugar / Bob Mould Coverstory at some point?
Cheers!
Paulie
Love it! Binghamton’s my hometown.
Brian, you’ve done it again. I absolutely love discovering songs that I had absolutely no idea about. Video Killed The Radio Star is one of my all-time fave 80s records (yes, I know it’s from 1979 but it’s just soooooo 80s). I’d never heard the Bruce Woolley version in all the 32 years since I bought the Buggles version as a kid and I didn’t even know it existed. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
You said that the North Kings are Norwegian. That surprised me because I live in Norway and I never heard of them. So I checked. FYI… Their FB and MS pages say they’re Finnish.
BTW… I love all the cross-genre covers you play. Love to hear how others can re-interpret a piece of music.
