Results of last week’s battle: Who did it better? Mark Ronson & Amy Winehouse or ortoPilot?
How about two versions of Phil Collins’ 1989 worldwide number one, “Another Day In Paradise”? I’ve got two very different versions for you today, starting with Coury Palermo’s harmonies layered over electronica, followed by Dolapdere Big Gang’s world beat Turkish-infused version.

Neither cover captured the feel of the song for me. I’ll just bet that there are way better covers out there. I can’t imagine that Phil (even as much as I like his work) could do the very best version of that song.
I was enjoying the Coury Palermo version then Dolapdere Bog Gang started and everything else was erased from my memory. Wow, what a great version. I am a sucker for a cover that uses the musical stylings of another culture. I am downloading their albums as I type. Thanks, once again for making me spend more of my hard earned on fantastic covers.
The vocalist for Dolapdere Big Gang sounded too much like Phil Collins, which is the only strike I have against that version. Otherwise, both were equally interesting covers. Coury Palermo’s version was so different that it made me really think about the song without associating it with the over-played and tired Collins version.
I actually liked that the Dolapdere vocalist sounded like Phil Collins; it was actually quite eerie. I absolutely loved the instrumentation in that version! I thought the Coury Palermo version was too “boy bandish”.
Hmmm… should have proof read. I actually hate that I actually used actually too many times. Sorry, folks.
Was sure I was going to vote for Coury’s harmonies until I heard DBG. I always enjoy ‘WTF is this??’ instrumentation starts to covers. The singer sounding a lot like Collins I think improves the contrast with tablas and bells.
I like Polermo’s version because it made me, for perhaps the first time, really hear the lyrics and think about them for the first time. In my defense, the song came out when I was 8, so I wasn’t really thinking about the depth of the lyrics at the time. With that said, Dolapdere’s version was so much more musically interesting. I have to go there. Two good covers, though.
Wish I could edit that, since I said “for the first time” twice. It’s hard to believe I write professionally.
Polermo’s version was nice, but I really love the Dolapdere Big Gang version, it really takes the song in a whole new direction. I love the Turkish instrumentals, full of Eastern promise!
I already like Turkish music, but was surprised to hear it here. Great way to salvage a song that I’m otherwise long-tired of.
Of course, when I first heard the original I liked the music there too. Those heavy-handed lyrics get old fast. The Turkish version just may give it more life!
When you said it had a “frou frou” sound, I was like “No, you mean imogen heap”. Then I forgot that they are in fact essentially the same band.
