The Manic Street Preachers have recorded a cover of Rihanna’s “Umbrella” for an upcoming NME (New Musical Express) ride-along CD. Second only to “Crazy”, I know from my inbox that people are getting tired of hearing covers of this song, however, I’ve heard the Manics’ cover, and it’s a great interpretation – very reminiscent of their “If You Tolerate This, Then Your Children Will Be Next”.
But I’ll leave it up to you. Play it as the final nail in the “Umbrella” cover coffin? Or have you already had enough? Tell me, and your wish will be my command.
This may sound unbelievable, but I’ve never heard any version of Umbrella, original or cover. But I do like Manic Street Preachers covers… their Can’t Take My Eyes Off You is one of my favourites. Sure, this can be my first exposure to Umbrella.
It’s the “Crazy” of 2007 for sure, but I think a lot of the covers improve on the original. To my ears, this new version is WAY more upbeat than “If you tolerate this…”, but I agree it has a distinctive Manics feel about it. On the basis that it’s British and I am, courtesy of Torchwood and Doctor Who, rather fond of the Welsh now, I say play it! We’ve just had St David’s day too on 1st March, so that’s another reason.
Yes yes yes yes YES!!!
The more Manics the better. They’re my favourite band of all time and although I’d agree Umbrella’s been overdone, it hasn’t been this well done.
Also fits in nicely with the Manics just being awarded the NME’s Godlike Genius Award at this year’s NME Awards in this here Britain.
Long live the Manics!
