The Brad Simmons song to close out the show is just beautiful. This was a great show and I loved the fact that it figured indie music.
I really like the outtakes at the end of the last couple shows. I can relate. For some reason it always seems to take about three false starts before getting one that’s coherent.
Good stuff.
Hey Brian loving the show here in the UK, just wanted to question whether the music you played really was pod-safe since there would be a royalty due to whoever wrote it regardless of who performed the song? Obviously in your case your licenses cover that though.
Steve
Hi Steve,
You bring up a good point.
I guess it depends on your definition of podsafe. I consider something podsafe if you are able to play it on your podcast without any fear of legal issue. You always need to get permission to play podsafe music, whether it’s from the indie artist, or via ASCAP/BMI/SESAC licenses which are available to anyone. If the music is “safe” to play in a podcast, I feel that it’s podsafe.
You sure temptation is by the copycat killers? I’m sure it could be by new order.
Hi Brian
I think that was my point – that as a cover the stuff by definition isn’t safe to play unless you’re licensed? You would need permission from both the performer *and* the writer
Steve
Whoops – “Copycat Killers” is the name of Cobra Verde’s album. Guess my train of thought was derailed when I typed that up…
New Order is absolutely the originator of that track.
Re: Podsafe.
Podsafe is certainly a point of view. Since those licenses are freely available to anyone to purchase, it’s available to anyone who wants to do it, just as is getting permission from an indie band.
I see your side as well, and I don’t think either one of us is wrong. It’s all in how we each define a term that, as of right now, doesn’t have an official definition. (Wikipedia, anyone?)
On Podsafe, I think the general consensus is that it means music that you can copy without asking permission or paying royalties, or where the artist requests you notify them but does not insist on any restrictions.
It means you could give the song away to other ‘podders or use it on a podcast without any chance of a problem.
Oh, and about Coverville, thanks! The bestist podcast ever.
Sounds like that’s the general concensus. Darn. With the nature of cover songs, It’ll be difficult to ever be Podsafe! (But I’ll have to come up with a term for ASCAP/BMI/SESAC-safe!)
