Queen is getting ready to release their first album in 13 years this September, and it’s going to include their first-ever cover song. The song hasn’t been announced, but it’s a great topic for discussion. What song would you like to hear Queen cover?
Respond in the comments! (NO Umbrella)
And to hear more details about the new album and tour, here’s an article on Uncut, and RoadRunnerRecords.com.
And to hear Queen covered, here’s a link to the Queen Cover Story from two years ago.
Paradise by the Dashboardlight?
There’s a great Dwight Yoakam track called “Crazy little thing called love”. I think it would really fit Queen’s style.
Oh….never mind…:-)
Hmmmm… Well, I’d have loved to see Freddie do Toxic. He’d have been able to camp it up to where it needed to be.
I’d like to see them do an Amplifico song, maybe ‘The Comedy Stops Here’. They’d be able to get some awesome guitar solos by converting some of Donna’s keyboard work.
If we have to do something more old media style, I’d like to hear them do a cover of Nirvana’s Lithium.
Yeah, that’d do.
Let’s be serious.
You can’t have The Doors without Jim Morrison. You couldn’t have Led Zeppelin without Robert Plant. There would be no Rolling Stones without Mick Jagger. There is no Mothers of Invention without Frank Zappa. Without John Fogerty, you’d have a heck of a party band, but it wouldn’t be CCR.
The group currently calling itself Queen has some truly amazing talent in it, some of which was also critical to Queen’s success. And clearly, if anybody has rights to the Queen name, these guys do. But without Freddie Mercury, there is no Queen.
That being said, maybe “(Nothing But) Flowers,” or “Fool’s Overture.”
I hadn’t thought of Toxic or Lithium – those could be some good songs. I think Jack Johnson’s “Sitting, Waiting, Wishing” might be an interesting song to hear Queen’s drama through.
Being serious now, Barry is right of course and, to be picky, it is not Queen + Paul Rodgers, it is Brian May and Roger Taylor + Paul Rodgers. Freddie was completely unique and irreplaceable, self taught as well, with a stage presence that most singers can only dream of. Doing a cover now at this stage of their careers is not a good idea i’d say.
Queen with Paul Rodgers…a good cover tune…
My thoughts:
Bad Case of Loving You
Pink Houses
Thunder Road
Fathers and Sons
I think with the combination of Brian May’s unique guitars and Paul’s vocals, there are a number of good covers that can come out of this relationship. As much as people equate Queen with Freddie Mercury, rock and roll isn’t etched in stone, even the greatest among them.
Technically it won’t be the first-ever cover song, that Queen has done in their career. During live concerts they’ve done covers of “Big Spender”, “Hello Mary Lou” and “Tutti Frutti”, to name just a few. And even without considering live tracks, there’s still “Doin’ Alright” from the first Album which is a cover of a Band called smile that featured Brian May, Rodger Taylor and Tim Staffel. Though two band members of Smile also were from Queen, I’d say that it’s a cover because May and Staffel are credited for the song, and the original version also got released on both vinyl and CD.
Greetings from Germany!
The clear answer is, of course, Umbrella.
F%*k, if I hear another cover of Umbrella, I’m going to shoot myself. I don’t care if Jesus H. Christ and Elvis do a duet, I don’t want to hear it.
I don’t know what kind of range Paul has anymore, but I’d love to hear him tackle something big and bombastic and somewhat contemporary, like “Rusty Cage” by Soundgarden or “Head Like a Hole” by Nine Inch Nails.
“Be Yourself” by Audioslave?
Or – here’s a curveball – “Blue Sky” by Patty Griffin. That’s a song that’s just begging for a big, dramatic cover.
They’re going to do “Hallelujah”
Did Genesis change there name when Peter Gabriel left?
Did Pink Floyd change there name when Roger Waters left?
or did Led Zeppelin change there name when John Bonham died, or AC/DC when Bon Scott died?
No, they didn’t because it would be really stupid to throw away a name that millions of people have know for more then 20 or 30 years
Brian, Roger and Paul decided to go on under the name Queen+Paul Rodgers, because everyone knows the name Queen (as the band whit Brian,Roger,John and Freddie),and they put the + Paul Rodgers in there to show that Paul is NOT replacing Freddie (he doesn’t want to).Okay it would have been cool iff John Deacon would return, but he made up his mind to retire from the music scene.
As for the cover song,
Well we just wait and see.
