Back by popular demand…
I’ve gotten a lot of requests for this, so I’ll be bringing back the 2005 Coverville Countdown episodes for the last five shows of the year. This year, like last year, I’ll ask you – the listeners – to submit your favorite cover song of all time (it doesn’t have to be something I’ve played before) for nomination. On Sunday, December 11, I’ll turn all the nominations into a voting form and ask you to vote for your favorite. Starting on (or around) December 20, I’ll begin counting down the top 30 songs as the last five shows of the year. Your nominated songs can be any cover song, whether I’ve played it or not, and can be from any year, not just 2005.
I’m going to try and make it a little more high tech this year, and use a form to submit your nominations. Hopefully, this will work. Click the link below to submit your nominations:

What a pity you can only nominate one song.
I nominated Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley, but there were many more I wanted to nominate such as Running Up That Hill by Placebo (orig. Kate Bush), One by Johnny Cash (orig. U2), and Jonathon Coulton’s Baby Got Back (orig. Sir Mix-A-Lot).
For mine, the most awsome cover I heard on Coverville through the year was the a capella version of U2’s Pride (In The Name Of Love) by Double Trebble as heard on ep.127. Then again, all of the songs played on that episode were just AWESOME. and yes Brian, I am subscribing to the AcapellaU podcast
The Mercy Seat – Johnny Cash – Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds
Hallelujah – John Cale – Leonard Cohen
Cast Your Fate to the Wind – Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin – Vince Guaraldi
Texas Trilogy – Lyle Lovett – Steve Fromholtz
Surprising covers! I’m taking the kids to see Shrek, my youngest has swallowed a coin
and we’re arguing over whether it is a dime or a quarter (and being shushed by the audience),
when I hear that familiar baritone during the love sequence.
I’m at The Fine Line in MPLS, seeing (the other) Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin, good set,
back for an encore, when I hear the piano intro I’d heard a thousand times as a child,
off the 45, sneaking into my sister’s room to play it while she was out
and Barbara is singing lyrics, it was an instrumental, I didn’t even know it had lyrics. I was into VInce Guaraldi before George Winston, even before Charlie Brown.
A young guy at work lends me the new Lyle Lovett CD. I pop it in and after the Texas Trilogy,
I’m in tears, at my desk, people are asking me if I’m OK, did somebody die?
How can I tell them that a snakebite took Mary Martin’s child,
and a fire in the old barn took the hay that Bill had piled.
Shame, only room for one vote.
I suggested ‘Song tor The Siren’ covered by Jimmy (The King) Brown, an Irish Elvis Impersonater covering this Tim Buckley song from Jimmys ‘Gravelands’ Album.
Unfortunately I typed in some wrong info on the form…the info above is correct.
Hmmm, I can’t use Firefox 1.5 to submit a comment. I have the text, but no entry fields. How odd.
If we can only nominate 1 song your survey page should warn us. I was expecting to enter maybe 5 songs. The one I submitted, while a good one, prolly isn’t what I’d have chosen as my #1.
Actually, I submitted 2 🙂 After entering a selection in Firefox it looked like the page didn’t work right. So I fired up IE and entered a different song, then realized I could still only enter 1 song. Not trying to stuff your ballot box or anything, just verifying unexpected results.
As the wise man once said, That about covers it!
I nominated “Highway to Hell” as performed by Hayseed Dixie on their album, “Hillbilly Tribute to AC/DC”.
Any song on that album is great material, though. Hilarious, to boot.
Yee haw!!!!

Only one nomination per person? *pout*
I put in for the Nina Gordon cover of “Straight Outta Compton” but if you are pulling from these comments too I want to put in a second nomination for Uncle Kracker’s cover of “Time After Time.”
Hey Tim Szeliga, Hi from another Minneapolis Coverville fan! I saw your mention of the Fine Line up above. I’m planning on being there at the end of the month for The Gear Daddies. (and I’m going to Mason Jennings at 1st Ave on Saturday) It’s a good month for music in Minneapolis! 🙂
Brian – Will your licensing agreement allow you to cite the show from which some of the nominated songs were played? Would help in narrowing down such a big list. I remember Sympathy for the Devil/Living for the City by Opie Gone Bad but if the Aslan version was ever played, it’s not worth the trouble searching the archive list onsie-twosie.
