Another great version of Peter Gunn is by the Tubes on their concert album “What Do You Want From Live” where they perform a crime medley starting off with a siren and then going into Dragnet, Peter Gunn before seguing into Perry Mason. Lots of fun and a great ‘threefer” for TV themes.
Another Good Jazz Version of Star Trek can be heard on Maynard Ferguson’s Album Best of Maynard Ferguson as well as Battlestar Galactica, Rocky, and Star Wars
Excellent episode! Regarding the MASH theme, “Suicide is Painless”, there was at least one episode when the lyrics were actually sang. In the episode, I believe it was Klinger who wanted to commit suicide. Enlisting the help of Hawkeye, a “living funeral” is planned, with the finale being Klinger laying in a coffin and Hawkeye agreeing to inject a poison into Klinger. While Klinger was laying in the coffin, the witnessing nurses sang “Suicide is Painless.” Of course, Hawkeye had no intention to assist in Klinger’s suicide, and a saline solution was injected instead.
Does anyone remember this episode?

That was the movie MASH. The dentist was having trouble with his, um, equipment and decided life wasn’t worth living anymore, so they gave him a “Black Capsule” (“Is it good?” “It worked for Hitler and Eva Braun”). At the funeral, the song was sung, with all four verses.
Awesome show, very happy you played my request.
If I had known you planned on doing a tv theme podcast, I would have suggested
1) Joan jett and the blackhawks – love is all around (mary tyler moore)
2) B-52’s Flinstones theme (they covered the song for the live action Flinstone movie) I actually just heard it on the radio.
I’m sure you know PLENTY of guys named Dan, and probably dozens named Dan who are also into The Jam. I am going to take the selfish liberty of assuming that you played the Batman theme for ME. Phewy on the Dan it was intended for!
“In the city there’s a thousand things I want to say to you…”
THANKS.

Hey Brian – thanks for the play! Great show as always.
As Adam mentioned, Joan Jett does a good version of the theme from Mary Tyler Moore. Funny story about that.. We’ve played with a local Joan Jett tribute a few times and, everytime we do a show with them, we coordinate our setlists so that we both don’t perform Mary Tyler Moore on the same night 🙂
