Loved everything, Brian. One of my favorite shows yet, but I’m a huge huge fan of Joni.
I was thrilled to hear the Herbie Hancock/Corinne Bailey Rae song, as I haven’t heard anything from this album yet.
There are so many brilliant covers of Joni’s songs. Cassandra Wilson has done several covers that just smolder. I also rather liked k.d. lang’s take on “Help Me” on that tribute album, although I know it’s awfully close to the original arrangement.
I’m surprised I don’t hear more Cassandra Wilson on your show, now that I think about it. She’s done some eclectic and remarkable covers of songs by Van Morrison, U2, Cyndi Lauper, Miles Davis, Robert Johnson, and a whole bunch of other people. She seems like a natural fit.
Travis, for the record, did a surprisingly touching version of “River.”
Thanks, by the way, for not playing any of the recent godawful covers of “Big Yellow Taxi.” It’s a great song that too often gets turned into tripe by middle-of-the-road pop hacks (I’m looking at you, Counting Crows.)
Great show, Brian. I was disappointed you didn’t play my request, though.

Hi Brian – GREAT job, as always. FYI, The Heavens to Murgatroid is from 1992.
2007 has been an incredible year for Joni covers, what with the Reprise collection (even though they put some old tracks on it like the Sarah, Annie stuff), Herbie’s brilliant CD, and two more collections from The Will Taylor Band (Austin, TX) & Big Yellow Taxi (Copenhagen), the latter being a collection of songs that Joni herself NEVER released. And of course, the year has been a rejuvenating one for Joni herself, with a new album, a ballet and a new art exhibit.
Thanks for keeping the Joni spirit alive! And since River’s been covered 134 times (to date), you’ve got lots more closing tracks to work with.
Happened to dig out Herbie Hancock’s Gershwin’s World from the stack and noticed that Joni was the vocalist on “The Man I Love” on that album.
good
