Listener Don pointed me to this absolutely beautiful cover of REM’s “It’s The End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)” performed by Julie Moffitt. I’ll see if I can contact Julie and get a recording of this to play on the show.
It’s a unique rendition, and in addition, it’s a way to learn the lyrics so you can sing along better than David Spade and Chris Farley in Tommy Boy.
Amusingly enough, the last time you played a cover of this song I was thinking to myself “I could probably do a slowed down cover of that which would be pretty cool.” Guess I wasn’t the first to think of it! Of course, I wouldn’t look as hot doing it…
Except for the Vic Chesnutt version this is the first time I’ve heard a non-heavy cover of the song, unlike the suicide machines or riddlin kids, – very good. This is definitely up there w/ sufjan stevens’ version of the one I love for the best rem covers on youtube and in general. Hope you get her to let you play the song, this might help: http://www.myspace.com/juliemoffitt
Very interesting!
You know, I could see Allison Crowe performing this song in that style, but with her beautiful piano playing rather than the Yamaha keyboard.
Adrian?
Scary, even before I read Wayne’s comment, I thought that there was something very Allison Crowe about this. An absolutely gorgeous version of an already incredible song. I hope we get to see and hear more from Julie!
