Last week, Jeff Buckley’s “Hallelujah” handily beat the John Cale version 63% to 27%, with several answers provided for “other”, including the beautiful versions by Rufus Wainwright, Alison Crowe and Joseph Arthur.
This week’s matchup pits two of my favorite versions of Electric Light Orchestra’s “Mr. Blue Sky” against one another. I love both of these versions, for different reasons. I’m a huge fan of Parthenon Huxley’s (also known as P. Hux) power pop, and I’ve recently become enamored with Lily Allen’s music.
Which of the following two versions do you think makes it a beautiful new day? (Hey hey hey?)
Lily Allen:

Parthenon Huxley:

I like Lily Allen a lot but this is waaaaaaayyy too busy. Gives me a headache!
Wow, this is a tough choice.
The faceoff is a great idea, but for "Hallelujah"? Jeff Buckley doesn' even make the top 6, considering (no particular order) k.d. lang, Willie, Allison Crowe, Wainwright, Popa Chubby, Teenage Girls & Mister Smartypants.
Whereas (as the Founding Fathers would put it):
— Both artists fulfill the requirement of making the song their own,
— as Lily Allen brings on the driving rhythm with an electro flavor,
— while Parthenon Huxley brings out the subtler meanings;
— and yet Lily Allen lets you dance to it,
— while Parthenon Huxley enchants our minds with interpretation
Therefore I am calling this a tie.
(But, full disclosure, voting for Lily since it's got the beat)
I've loved the original ever since the movie "spotless mind" reminded me of how good it was. Then when brian played the lily allen version, I loved it even more.
Interesting. Didn't get here and listen until it was too late to vote, but I would of gone with Huxley. Lily Allen's version is good and faithful to the original, but Huxley's version edges it out in terms of making it his own.
Got an idea for a next one. Stuck in the Middle With You. In my mind, Jeff Healey's version is definitive to me.
