I’ve gotten a lot of recommendations this morning to check out an excellent article and list of Cover Songs from the Torontoist. I like how they’ve grouped them into sections (like “Better Than the Original” and “Updating the 80’s”). There are even some links to great YouTube videos.
What I think I’m liking the most, however, are the comments. Some great ideas there for future shows, and of course, excellent suggestions for nominations into the upcoming 2006 Cover Song Countdown.
(Thanks to Dale, Prescott, Jordan, Dan, Jonathan, Andrew, Paulie Coconuts, Winston Wolf, and Henry for sending me a link to the article. You folks are really on the ball.)
Thanks for that, many many covers I have not heard
My i-tunes is already groaning with covers; a few more won’t harm though.
Was interested in that Mel B version of “word up”. Classic song that…
b’garsh! thought surely crashtestdummies doing “androgynous” would be there. maybe they’re justly forgotten (the canadians, not the ‘Mats!)
I think I nominated the White Stripes “Jolene” cover for the countdown last year. I love it. Jack White can sing it so powerfully without a trace of gender-issue irony. He does the same thing in concert with Nancy Sinatra/Cher’s “Bang, Bang (He shot me down)” with his new(ish) band, The Raconteurs. I heard them here in Minneapolis. It was great. I’m not sure if that has been recorded, other than bootlegs, but it would be a great addition to this year’s countdown.
Thanks.
