i hate you.
shoulda seen it coming, but didn’t…
Fooled me until you mentioned the Laotian guerillas 🙂
I hate you too…
I promised myself wouldn’t get caught by an april fool prank this year, how could I suspect it would come from an “innocent podcast”.
Nice one Brian.
Good weekend to all…
Francois
Well done.
Got me. Damn you.
Great finds. Loved Safety Dance.
– dK
Nice! I knew Britney stole all her best songs! 🙂
BTW, you have a typo. You’ve got this listed as show #164 instead of 194.
~Sharon
You are one sick puppy. I fell for this. Hook, line and sinker. Even convinced a co-worker that Nirvana’s “Come As You Are” was a cover.
Oops I did it again is what saved me from complete foolishness.
Bravo on an excellent job.
The giveaway initially was this being listed as #164 (which I’m assuming was deliberate.) Amusing overall, though. Alas, I’m being all wary today about April Fools gags.
I enjoy the show though.
You know what? I don’t care if it WAS an April Fools gag…it was frickin’ awesome!!!
I fell for it until you mentioned Engelbert Humperdink…NO ONE mentions Engelbert Humperdink unless there’s a joke involved…
James Bean Royal Jelly Orchestra Variety Hour??!!!
I think I love you.
Fab show, Brian.
You had me until the sitars kicked in on Safety Dance. It was plausible until then!
Well done, as always. Thanks!
I was trying to decide how to break it to my “massive zepplin fan” buddy that ‘Stairway..’ was a cover when the little voice in the back of my head wouldn’t shut up about ‘come as you are’ being Kurt’s song. Almost compleatly snowed me. Good show Brian!
Brian, you got me hook, line and sinker. I survived April 1st, but not April 2nd (the time it was available in Australia)
I don’t understand why everyone says this was an April Fool’s edition, I thought all these nifty originals were just awesome. I always thought Jagger and Richard wrote “Honky Tonk Women,” was there ever a lawsuit over that?
By the way, I’ve never been able to get a clean feed of your Feb. 2 show, mine keeps skipping back to the beginning. Is there anything special I need to do to fix that?
😉
By the way, it’s spelled Jaymz Bee, FYI.
Brilliant show! I am a relatively new Coverville aficionado and was already really loving the show. The comic timing and sense of humor of this edition has me hooked completely!
I was suckered until the last track…I just couldn’t shake the feeling that Satchmo didn’t sound quite right…
Keep up the great work!
damn you! just as my jaw was dropping and i was about to call my friend to tell her she HAD to download this episode immediately, the safety dance brought me to my senses.
silver beatles indeed.
good work and thanks for the laugh.
The table doesn’t seem to have any of the songs listed anymore.
Good show…I’m sad to say that you had me until “Oops I did it again.”
Wow! That was cool–and EVIL!
I just got around to listenning to this one on my way to work this morning. I hadn’t fully woken up, so I bit on “Call Me.” As I’m not a Rolling Stones fan, “Honkey Tonk Woman” didn’t show up on my radar.
But, when I heard “Safety Dance,” I was remembering something I saw on (don’t hate me) VH1’s One-Hit Wonder countdown. The song was a pro-moshing anthem. That is what caused it clicked with me: this is an April Fool’s Joke!
Very well done, sir. Very well done!
Great Show as usual, Brian.
You had me until “Oops.”
Absolutely amazing!
I was listening with rapt attention at the Originalville. I even made a mental note to check on the Large Papa imprisonment… we didn’t do anything till ’83?! Man!
Once the Beatniks came on, though… I caught on. At that moment, the only thought that ran through my head was “You are a bad, bad man Brian iBbott!!!”
I should have been ready for something, as it was 1 April, but I TRUSTED you… That, for me, makes this best April Fool’s in a long time.
It’s always the quiet ones…
What’s worse than being had by an April fools joke?
Being had by an April Fools Joke on APRIL 3RD.
God, I’m such a gullible ass.
I should have seen it, but I, too, was taken. Except when I heard “Stairway to Heaven” by the Beatnix – I seem to remember you playing them sometime before, and I had to check the website.
It wasn’t until I read others’ comments that I felt much better about being taken in.
This is definitely on par with your February 2nd show. I keep listening to it over and over. and over and over.
I was getting ready to IM my husband and tell him to check out the “original” version of “Honkey Tonk Woman” when I thought about the April 1 date of the podcast. After the VERY cool Groundhog’s Day podcast, I thought I’d better check the Coverville site to see if there was any indication that I was being had. Well, I guess now I know… Well played.
I may still put a copy on CD for him to listen to in his truck, just to see how long I can pull him into the joke for.
Great work! Thanks for the cool covers and the laugh!
You actually had me until The Beatnix. Given that the Stones weren’t above stealing songs outright and claiming them as their own (The Last Time, I think), the story of Godfrey Daniel was thoroughly plausible.
And I’m ashamed to say that I nearly leapt off the can when I heard the opening lines of I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For…
Long time listener, first time commentor
This is exactly why I love Coverville!!!!!!!!!!!
Er……can we still get another *real* Originalville though? :oD
Like most everyone else, I was taken in. I think I realized something might be up as of “Safety Dance”, but I didn’t think to check the podcast show date until “Stairway to Heaven”.
Well played, clerks…
You rat!!!
I fell for it completely until I read the comments here.
How about a White Stripes cover? For example, there is the Hard-Fi version of Seven Nation Army on their “Cash Mashine” EP.
Thanks, Walt in Minneapolis
EEEEEEEEVVVVIIIILLLLLLLL!!!!!
Made me look like a fool when I tried to explain to my friends that Bono didn’t write the song. Ugh!!!!!
You fooled me big time. 🙂
Wow, I can’t believe how many people you hooked on this one.
The first three tracks were somewhat belivable, enen ‘Still Haven’t Found’ might have been a plausable story, but Stairway and Come as You Are???
Think there ought to be an award for podcast host with the best sense of humour.
Brilliant. I just linked to it from my blog: http://www.noelheikkinen.com/blog_archives/001811.php
You had me right up until Stairway to Heaven, You should have stopped while you were ahead. Good work!
Ugh… I can’t tell you how many ways I tried to google “big poppa” and “laotian kiddnapping”.
Absolutely wonderful! It’s April 4th, and you had me until the U2 “Original”. The Silver Beatles was a nice touch. Covers or originals, I’m really enjoying this episode. Count my vote for another REAL Originalville episode.
Oh man…you had me until the Beatniks. THEN it hit me. ‘doh!
ALSO: your commenting does not work in Firefox…I can’t see any of the form fields. You might want to fix that.
You had me all the way through the end. Even at “Oops I Did It Again,” I thought, “well, Richard Thompson endorsed this song.” And the “Stairway to Heaven” cover was rendered perfectly in that Mersey-beat style. It also helps that you keep your regular shows pretty straight–no comedy routines. So I was not on guard.
You had me until Jaymz Bee. A very convincing and well done April Fools joke. Bravo and Kudos.
What I hate is that I swallowed the line about Laotian guerillas hook line and sinker and it was not until you got to Stairway to Heaven that I said. What! Ohhhh nooooo! Hats off to you.
My new favorite among the many covervilles I’ve listened to. And one of the best April fools I’ve ever encountered.
I can’t believe it took me so long! It was the beat version of Stairway that did it. I listen at work and ended up having to explain my laughter to my co-workers.
Hats off, once again. A great episode – and a top April Fool.
– chris.
No April Fool here….although you did have me diving for my music verification sources
I too was suckered in until late in the show. The Beatnix was where the light started to come on, but I didn’t fully catch on until you broke out Louis Armstrong’s “Oops I Did It Again” orignal. Loved the Laotian guerrillas story – it was so unbelievable I believed it. Given Bono’s prediliction for Big Causes, I could really believe the story. Ugh!
You got me. I had to listen to it twice to catch what happened. I was just amazed as I listened to it that all of these were the originals. Then at the end, I still didn’t get it. I came here to comment and finally I GOT IT. I guess that’s what I get for listening at work and trying to work at the same time.
Great show. Keep up the awesome work.
AAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!
Like a dumb ass, I went to the programing director of our local rock station and said….
Needless to say, I am the dumb ass!! I can not beleive that I fell for this… I think the fact that I heard it on Monday is part of the reason – but still…
(on knees) I’m not worthy. I’m not worthy.
I was a little skeptical while listening to the show and when you got to the U2 cover, I knew it was a gag since I have the Big Daddy CD that the track appears on so I knew you were making stuff up at which point I just sat back and enjoyed the odd stories you came up with. You have a great imagination. I’m glad I listen to you.
had me till Laotian guerillas… oh my gosh…
gosh, i felt stupid.
good job.
What makes a good and believable “lie” is background information-a story that includes dates and names and connection references-this show was fantastic!!!! You are brilliant!
I was duped! It really hit me that some of the things you were saying didn’t quite make sense around “come as you are” but since I was listening on April 3rd I wasn’t thinking about April Fool’s Day! I laughed at myself all week!
Coverville Rocks!!!!!!!
AARRGH!! I fell for the Safety Dance thing, and only started questioning things at the Laotian guerillas! That’s what I get for listening so late – I’d forgotten all about April Fools’ Day. Dang you to heck!
Oh, man, you totally got me. A week later, no less. This is the only April Fool’s joke I fell for. Brilliant. The songs weren’t bad either 🙂
You fooled me untill I got to the Beatnix. That was too weird to be true! Nice show.
I was fooled until “Stairway to Heaven.”
a)The style is too lazily molded after “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” and “Twist & Shout”
b) There’s no way even the Fab 4 could have written those lyrics (pre-Sgt-Pepper, anyway). It’s like a toddler reciting Shakepeare 😉
At first I thought that was just that one song that was an April Fools joke, but I must say I was confused once “Oops I did it Again” came on, cause that was also clearly a fake…
Turns out the *whole episode* is a fake. Good show, good show I say!
But technically, Britney Spears did cover “her” song; it was written by committee 🙂
Damn you!!! I just told everyone I work with that Safety Dance was orignally done by Englebert Humperdink!
Good idea, but didn’t get me. Since “Call Me” was written for the soundtrack to American Gigolo it stuck out pretty obviously that this was a cover.
Oh man, I wish I hadn’t procrastinated listening to this until April 15. You totally pwn3d me. 😀
I just started to listen to Coverville (after being referred here from another podcast), and this was the first episode I listened to (this morning, on the way to work).
I have to admit, I was sucked in all the way till the last one, when I really just couldn’t believe that song was a cover of a Louis Armstrong song, though I ended up running a web search to be sure, which turned up this:
http://maisonbisson.com/blog/post/10853/
I’m still catching up on a couple of other podcasts I like, so I guess I know now that I have to watch out for April 1 editions…..
You got me hook, line, and sinker. THANKS!
Well, after the Groundhog Day edition I knew not to trust you too blindly. Only just got the chance to listen to the ‘cast today, and I’m pleased to say that it was with Honky Tonk Woman that I thought, hello, something’s up here. Then all the others just confirmed it for me until Oops I Did It Again which just had me in fits!
Well done, another corker. Your show just gets better & better.
You had me fooled for at least halfway thru. . . excellent execution within an already superior podcast.
Can you do a real version of this – unknown (or under-credited) originals of famous covers, by solid artists, later blindly accepted as new works years later by the mainstream performer?
Tom Waits performing “Jersey Girl” (Springsteen made it a concert signature) for example.
Does it still count as an April Fool’s Joke when you’re fooled until listening for the second time on May 7?
Well, this specific episode is how I found out about Coverville. It was in a list of top Internet April Fools pranks. I already knew that this was a joke, but when I played it for my brother and sister-in-law, they were taken in until “Stairway to Heaven”. My brother is a huge U2 fan and was fooled by Big Daddy! The look on my sister-in-law’s face was priceless when “Stairway” first started, before she realized that it was not the original.
This episode isn’t working on your web site and it didn’t come thru Itunes…any other way to get it?
You had me until the very last song. Probably didn’t help that I was listening in June…
aw, man! my april’s fool came in october. this is awesome!
